sisäpiha - courtyard

The proposal features a wind-protected indoor courtyard, aptly named “sisäpiha,” which serves as a versatile space for outdoor exhibitions, dining, and children’s play. This sunny courtyard is designed to be the museum’s vibrant heart, with a sail cloth ready to shield visitors from inclement weather.

The museum’s entrance is thoughtfully placed at the rear of the courtyard, accessible from the western harbour basin and the waterfront, inviting visitors to explore the seamless transition from the bustling city to the tranquility of the museum. The construction along Toinen linja allows the roof to rise gracefully northwards, housing the temporary exhibition hall and main exhibition space on different floors.

Our design incorporates an ingenious use of roof tiles to filter daylight, creating an enchanting evening glow. While the extensive use of tiles connects the museum to its surroundings, we’ve taken the task into consideration to ensure the museum remains open and welcoming, avoiding a closed-off appearance.
